WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO PURSUE A CAREER IN A TRADE?
I decided to pursue trades for the unique opportunities and challenges it had to offer. I was also inspired by the WIT (Women In Trades) group and wanted to be a part of something like that and inspire other women to go into trades too.
WHAT CERTIFICATIONS, DESIGNATIONS OR TRAINING DO YOU HOLD / OR HOPE TO ACHIEVE?
3rd Year electrical certificate, bluebeam training (redlining prints, drawing prints) I hope to achieve my red seal in electrical and become dual ticketed eventually in either power engineering or instrumentation.
WHAT DO YOU ENJOY ABOUT YOUR CHOSEN TRADE AND WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN THE FUTURE?
I love the technical side of electrical. I love reading, following and redlining prints, troubleshooting and rebuilding/repairing devices. I love the code and enjoy being well versed in it and being able to do the calculations. In the future (next 2-3 years) I hope to have my redseal in electrical and have experience in the various fields of the trade. I believe it is very important to have experience in multiple areas.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU TO BE A RECEIPIENT OF THE COAST MOUNTAIN HYDRO TRADES BURSARY AND HOW WILL THIS BURSARY ASSIST YOU IN YOUR JOURNEY?
With receiving this bursary, I hope to gain extremely valuable experience in the hydro industry as that is what I most wanted to do when I embarked on this journey of becoming an electrician. I want to keep learning new things and I am grateful for any opportunity to learn, especially one as great as the Coast Mountain Hydro bursary. This bursary also helped me financially. Earlier this summer, I purchased my first house, and this bursary helped me with my cost of living. This work experience I believe would open the door for many more and new opportunities in the field I want to pursue.
IS THERE ANYTHING YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE THAT YOU THINK WOULD BE INSPIRATIONAL TO OTHER TAHLTANS?
Take advantage of all the amazing opportunities given to you. Even if you’re not sure where your headed, try anything and everything that’s offered. If it doesn’t end working, it is better to have tried it than be left wondering. Be persistent and ambitious and keep an open mind.
